LED profile spot hire — Selecon PLPROFILE1

A profile is the lantern you reach for when the beam needs an edge. The PL Profile 1 gives you a hard-edged, shapeable pool of light from an RGBW LED engine, with four shutters for framing and a slot for a gobo or an iris. Zoom runs from 18 to 34 degrees, so it covers a tight special on a soloist or a wider acting area from the same bar. Hire is £15 per day, on its own or with a technician.

The Selecon PL Profile 1 is an LED profile spotlight for work that needs a defined edge: a face lit cleanly without spill onto the set, a gobo breaking up a bare wall, a shape thrown onto a backdrop. Its 18 to 34 degree zoom lens tray suits most school hall and small theatre throws, giving you a tight special on a soloist or a wider acting area from the same position on the bar.

Inside is a 120W RGBW LED engine drawing 150 watts at most, which Selecon rate as the equivalent of a 500W tungsten profile. There are no lamps to change and no gel to burn through. Nor is a dimmer channel involved, because the fixture runs from a constant supply and takes its level from DMX. White light adjusts from roughly 2700K to 5600K with full colour mixing on top, so you can match an existing tungsten rig or go somewhere else entirely.

Four framing shutters shape the beam, and an accessory slot behind the gate takes an M-size gobo holder or an iris. Control is DMX512 over 5-pin XLR, in and through, with three modes: 15 channels for 16-bit, 9 for 8-bit, or a simple 3-channel mode. Power is powerCON in and through, so fixtures can be daisy-chained. An LCD menu on the back handles addressing and stores white presets for running without a desk.

The luminaire weighs 8.5 kg and hangs on a standard hook clamp. Take it as a dry hire, or ask us to supply a technician to rig, focus and run it.

Alongside the LED version we hire the Selecon Acclaim Profile, its tungsten predecessor, at £20 per day. It does the same shaping job: four framing shutters, a slot for a gobo or an iris, and a zoom lens to set the beam width. The difference is the source. A 600 watt halogen lamp gives the warm white that stage lighting was built on, and it warms further as it fades, in a way LED fixtures only imitate. That makes the Acclaim the natural choice where it has to sit beside an existing tungsten rig, or where a director simply wants the classic look. It asks more of the venue, though. There is no DMX on board, so it needs a dimmer channel to change level, and colour means gel in the 125 mm frame rather than a command from the desk. If your hall has working dimmers, that is no obstacle at all. Tell us which you are after and we will steer you honestly between the two.

What you get

The PL Profile 1 with the 18-34 degree zoom lens tray fitted
Tell us how you are rigging and we will confirm hook clamp and safety bond with your quote
Gobo holders and irises are accessories rather than part of the fixture, so say if you need one and which pattern you are after
DMX runs on 5-pin XLR, in and through. Let us know how many cables the rig needs and roughly how it is laid out
Mains is powerCON in and through. Confirm the socket type at your venue and we will make up the right lead
You will need a lighting desk or DMX controller to run it. We can quote one alongside if you do not have one

Good for

A clean front-of-house special on a soloist in a school hall, without light spilling onto the set behind
Gobo projection onto a cyc, a back wall or a plain curtain: breakup, window, foliage or a shape for a scene
Dance school shows where side and front specials need to stay off the legs and masking
Amateur dramatic society sets where the light has to stop at a doorway, an arch or the proscenium
Village halls and small venues with limited power, or no working dimmer racks
Lecterns, award presentations and speech days where one person needs their own controlled pool of light
Topping up an existing tungsten rig, with the white balance dialled in to match rather than clash

What you need to know

What it does
The lantern for a hard-edged pool of light: a spot on a soloist, a shaped square on a set piece, or a gobo pattern on the floor.
Colour
Full colour mixing and adjustable white from warm to daylight, all from the desk. No gel to buy, cut or replace mid-run.
Shaping the beam
Four shutters frame it, and a slot behind the gate takes a gobo or an iris. The zoom covers 18 to 34 degrees.
Power
150 watts at most from a normal socket. The maker rates the output as an equivalent to a 500 watt tungsten profile, at under a third of the power.
Control
DMX over 5-pin XLR. Three channels for simple dimming and colour, fifteen for everything.
