As a rough guide, one every two to three metres of wall gives a continuous band of colour, and one every four to five metres reads as accents. Corners, pillars, banners and the stage edge all take one nicely. Tell us the size of the room and the look you want and we will suggest a number. Ask for as many as the event needs — we can bring more in from trusted suppliers.

Will the battery really last the whole event?

On a single colour, yes, comfortably: up to 18 hours on a full charge. Colour fades and chases run about 8 hours and everything at full is nearer 4, with an eco mode that stretches multi-colour programmes further. Cold rooms shorten battery life, so charge fully the night before — 5 hours switched off. Any unit that lands near a socket can simply run on mains through its IEC inlet.

Can the colours change during the evening?

Yes, three ways. The IR remote changes colour, speed and mode from across the room, with the unit set as master. A W-DMX compatible wireless transmitter puts every unit on a lighting desk with no cable between them, and we can add the transmitter and desk to the hire. Or cable them with 3-pin XLR like any other DMX fixture, in 4, 6 or 11 channel modes. There is also a sound-active mode that moves with the music.

Can they go outside or in a marquee?

No. The Rapid QB1 is an indoor fixture with no IP rating, and the manufacturer is clear it must be kept away from rain and moisture. Weatherproof battery uplighters do exist, so if your event is under canvas or in the open, tell us and we will suggest something suitable.

Wireless uplighter hire — LEDJ Rapid QB1

Uplighting is the quickest way to make a plain hall feel dressed for the evening. Stand these along the walls, pick a colour, and the room changes. The LEDJ Rapid QB1 runs on its own battery and takes its instructions from a remote or wireless DMX, so there is nothing to plug in and no cable runs to tape down. It holds a colour for up to 18 hours on one charge, and hires at £10 per day.

The LEDJ Rapid QB1 is a compact battery uplighter built around four 8W quad-colour RGBA LEDs. The amber chip is the one that earns its keep: alongside the deep saturated colours you would expect, it mixes warm golds and soft pastels that make a room look inviting rather than lit. The unit is about the size of a biscuit tin and throws a 15 degree beam up the wall behind it. With no mains lead in use, it goes exactly where the room needs it rather than where the sockets are.

Inside is a 14.8V lithium battery good for up to 18 hours on a single colour, around 8 hours of colour fades and chases, or about 4 hours with every LED at full. An eco mode stretches multi-colour programmes further, and the display shows remaining charge so there are no surprises mid-event. Recharging takes 5 hours through an ordinary IEC mains lead with the unit switched off, and if a position happens to be near a socket, the unit will run on mains and charge as it goes.

Control suits whoever is running the evening. The supplied IR remote sets static colours, fades, sound-active and strobe from across the room. The on-board menu does the same, with 25 colour presets including proper white colour temperatures. For desk control there is built-in wireless DMX, compatible with W-DMX transmitters, and wired 3-pin XLR in and out for a conventional run. DMX modes are 4, 6 or 11 channels, and a group can follow one master unit so everything changes together.

Each unit weighs 3kg and stands 204mm tall. A fold-out foot angles the beam up to 25 degrees away from the wall, and there is an M12 rigging point and a safety bond eye if you would rather clamp one to a bar. It is an indoor fixture with no weather rating, so it stays inside.

Hire by the day, dry hire or with a technician to place the units, set the colour and have the room ready before anyone arrives.
