Sony A7S III hire — camera, lenses and filming kit

Stage lighting looks bright from the seats and dim to a camera. The Sony A7S III is the exception: a full-frame camera that trades pixel count for sensitivity, so a hall lit for performance comes out clean, with colour intact and shadows that still hold detail. It records 4K at up to 120 frames per second with no clip length limit, which is exactly what filming a two-act show asks of a camera. The body hires at £125 a day, and the complete Filming Package, with lens, tripod, power, storage and a full audio rig in one booking, is £145.

When there is not enough light, the A7S III is the camera the industry reaches for. Its full-frame sensor carries 12.1 megapixels where most carry 30 or more, and each of those larger pixels gathers more light. In practice that means stage lighting, which is far dimmer than it looks from the seats, reads as a well-lit scene: clean colour, open shadows, no grain crawling through the blacks. Sensitivity runs to ISO 102,400 as standard and 409,600 expanded, and Sony quotes 15 stops of dynamic range, so a follow spot and a dark stage can sit in the same frame without either giving way.

It records 4K at up to 120 frames per second in 10-bit 4:2:2, with no clip length limit, onto two card slots that can record simultaneously as a safety copy. The 120fps setting gives true slow motion for dance and movement work. There is a 9.44 million dot viewfinder, a vari-angle touchscreen, and a body weight of 699g, so it works handheld, on a tripod or on a gimbal without argument.

Two lenses cover most jobs. The FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM, at £58 a day, is the working zoom: wide enough to hold a full stage from a cramped hall, with a constant f/2.8 that keeps the low-light advantage at every focal length. The FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA, at £22.75 a day, is a small, very sharp Zeiss prime for interviews, pieces to camera and tight shots from the wings, and its f/1.8 aperture buys another stop when the light is at its worst.

The DJI RS 3 gimbal, at £18 a day, adds movement: a three-axis stabiliser with automated axis locks and a 3kg tested payload, so the body and the wide zoom sit well inside its limit for walking shots, backstage material and aftermovies. The Atomos Ninja recording monitor, at £23 a day, earns its place twice over: its screen makes judging focus in a dark auditorium far easier than the camera's own display, and it records the camera's HDMI output to an SSD in edit-ready ProRes at the same time, giving you a second copy of the show as it happens.

The Filming Package, at £145 a day, is the whole kit in one booking: the A7S III body, the 16-35mm GM, a heavy-duty carbon-fibre tripod, three NP-FZ100 batteries with a SmallRig charger, two 128GB and two 256GB SanDisk Extreme PRO cards, a Zeiss lens cleaning kit, and the complete Audio Recording Package. That last part matters: a Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun microphone, an XLR lead, a Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface and an Apple Mac Mini M4 with Logic Pro, a Dell 24-inch touch monitor, keyboard and mouse, so the sound is captured properly rather than left to the camera's own microphone. The audio package also hires on its own at £45 a day. Everything hires by the day, dry hire or with a technician.

What you get

The Filming Package: A7S III body, FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM, a heavy-duty carbon-fibre tripod, three NP-FZ100 batteries, a SmallRig charger, two 128GB and two 256GB SanDisk Extreme PRO cards, and a Zeiss lens cleaning kit
The complete Audio Recording Package comes inside the Filming Package as standard
The Audio Recording Package on its own: Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun microphone, XLR lead, Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface, and an Apple Mac Mini M4 with Logic Pro, a Dell 24-inch touch monitor and a USB keyboard and mouse
The body, both lenses, the RS 3 gimbal and the Atomos monitor all hire individually by the day
The 55mm prime, the gimbal and the Atomos are not inside the Filming Package: add whichever ones the job calls for
Not included as standard: lighting, radio microphones, a second camera, or someone to operate it all. Any of these can be added; tell us the job and we will quote

Good for

Filming school productions and dance showcases under stage lighting, for the archive or for parents to buy
Promo videos for dance schools, theatre groups and churches
Aftermovies of fetes, festivals and community events, with the RS 3 carrying the camera through the crowd
Carol services, concerts and candlelit events where the lighting cannot be raised for the camera
Interviews and pieces to camera on the 55mm, with broadcast-grade sound from the shotgun rig
True slow motion at 4K 120fps for dance and movement work

What you need to know

What it does
A full-frame camera built for low light: it films stage-lit and candlelit events cleanly, where ordinary cameras give you grain and murk.
Low light
ISO runs to 102,400 as standard and 409,600 expanded. Stage lighting that defeats most cameras is comfortable territory.
Recording
4K at up to 120 frames per second in 10-bit colour, onto two card slots, with no clip length limit. A two-act show records in one take.
Sound
The Audio Recording Package puts a Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun through a Focusrite interface into Logic Pro on a Mac Mini M4, so the sound is worth as much as the pictures.
Power
Runs on Sony NP-FZ100 batteries. The Filming Package carries three, with a SmallRig charger that plugs into ordinary UK mains.
Carrying it
The body weighs 699g, so it goes handheld, on the package tripod, or on the RS 3 gimbal, which takes the body and wide zoom with capacity to spare.
